They can get them from just walking through long grass and fields and such like,especially where sheep have been!
Your best bet is the frontline flea and tick spot on stuff,If you are tweezering them out yourself then do make sure that you pull the head an legs out from under the skin otherwise if left in they'll get infected! You need to kill the tick first to make it easier to pull out,either by spraying with flea spray or you can cover the tick in vaseline...ticks breath through air holes along each side of their body,so by covering them in vaseline it actually suffocates them...wait a few seconds before pulling it out. this should make it easier to remove the whole body and head!
