As far as spiders go these aren't technically giants, but they are some of the largest jumping spiders on the planet

My species in culture;
Hyllus sp (javan heavy jumper) (18mm body, up to 47mm legspan)
Phidippus audax (bold jumper) (22mm body, up to 30mm legspan)
Phidippus regius (regal jumper) (22mm body, up to 30mm legspan)
Phidippus cf. otiosus (Daring Jumper) (20mm body, up to 30mm legspan)
and hopefully
Telamonia dimidiata (Indian 2 stripe jumper) (11mm body, up to 30mm legspan)

anyone else keep any large (over 10mm) species?

Very nice - like the green fangs on the P.audax.

How do they compare to T's keeping wise - I assume they need a more spacious enclosure and some hight so they can "jump" - but what about temp and humidity etc etc?

Very cute! I love playing with the native ones in the garden on sunny days.
I guess these are not common in the trade?

care depends on species, audax likes it dry, Hyllus like it humid, regius aren't overly fussy but do better humid.

and no they are not common in the hobby, YET :) but will be soon enough

the babies take D.hydei fruit flies, pretty easy to rear. will have some hyllus giganteus spiderlings available soon.

hyllus average at 15mm body length, with males averaging 17mm.

phidippus average 13mm - 15mm but they can reach 22mm

on average the hyllus are larger, and theales have a huge legspan, but the phidippus can get larger on rare occasion.

Ah so Hyllus have a better average size the phiddipus :)
Which ones have you got breeding now from the above species?
Noticed most of the males look just like P.audaxx to confuse things

breeding hyllus sp and otiosus at the moment, others are immature.

yeah, very confusing but p. otiosus males are beige and black instead of monochrome!!

regius males fangs flip over between yellow, green, blue etc but green fangs on audax stay green.

Hiya, I'm a zoologist and salticid fan from manchester. We've been doing some work on their cognitive abilities and it seems that they're pretty amazing (see here http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19025531.400-smarter-than-the-average-bug.html) as far as the tropical species go, but nobody knows much about our uk ones, or very much at all for that matter.

Anyway, for my undergraduate project I want to get hold of some for breeding, and then basically train them whilst feeding them as many fruit flies as they fancy.

Only problem is there's none left that I can see in the UK here, since there's been no summer... And unless you have any tips on where to find them I'm a little bit scuppered.

Do any of you have any ideas on getting some spiders, finding or buying - I don't mind. My limit on my project is March, and I'll be writing the paper in April... Any advice you can give would be brilliant.

Cheers for your time, and hoping you can help!!

generally they are safe to hold but if it waves its front legs at you then don't bother because it will either jump away or bite.

my male otiosus always does this but the female likes being handled

Phiddipus audax have sort of shiny black scales on the abdomen while Phiddious regius have the same texture all over...apparantly :)
