Hi there,

I'm new on this forum so hope you won't mind my questions...

I am considering getting some hermit crabs in a couple of months' time and trying to gather as much information as possible on them before I make my mind up.

So far, I have found answers to all my questions on the Internet except for this one: what do you do with your hermies when you go on holidays??? Can you have some sort of auto-feeder like the ones for fish? I found something similar on a US website (not sure if I can post the link here?) but nothing in the UK... Or big blocs of food that dissolve progressively over a certain period of time? I have 3 ferrets that I board when I go away but I'm not sure whether this is possible with hermit crabs? And I do not know anybody close by I could trust to come in my flat to feed them while I'm away...

I'd rather think about this before getting the critters, even if this means I cannot have any :(

Thanks!

O

A lot of decent exotics shops will board your critters for a small fee, ask the one your crabs are coming from. As to specific crab care - sorry, no idea.

You can get dried crab food - you can get it online if you google the Absolutely Crabulous site - however I have never used it myself so don't know exactly how long it would last. I leave my guys with apple or mushed banana mixed with honey, this seems to last quite well for a couple of days.

It would really depend how long you intend to go away for, as with any other pet. Many reptile shops have boarding facilities - it might be worth asking around for reputable ones that offer this service.

Thanks for the replies.
I didn't know that pet shops can offer this kind of service. I will check with my local one.
