They have quite amazing little characters for crabs. Really funny at times. :D

They don't really smell at all, the only thing is if they decide to burrow. You spend weeks looking at an empty tank. :D

SD do you have 2 water dishes in with them? It's recommended to have one with normal water and then another with salty water as they will use both in the wild. A wee pinch of aquarium salt (not table  ) is all that's needed.

i only have 1 water dish with spring water in .
from what ive read all over is that the ones i have are the only ones that dont require saltwater whereas most do

well :|

bob would appear to have been (dunno if its the correct term , but it applies to birds & reps ) dead in shell
guess it was on its way out at the show cos it never emerged from its house .

soooo...................
i came back from my petshop today with another fresh EXTREMELY active err bob2
hes that active that he will quite happily come almost right out of the shell to walk on your hand .
& gotta say they are rather odd behind the usual claw/leg parts you normaly see .
in fact its almost alien looking , but boy are they fascinating :D
not sure why ive not got any before but im glad i have now 8)
i might have to set up a decent sized tank & get a few more .
unless rick comes through with the mitten crabs that is , cos its their tank that the hermies would be having :P

RIP Bob, welcome Bob2 :D

They are pretty freaky naked aren't they? I had one that used to pop out of his shell, do a naked streak around the viv, before popping back into his shell any carrying on as normal.

I love my crabs, they like being in huge groups though so I must get some more. We have four at the moment but they are in a 3ft tank so plenty of room for some more.

The main think with crabs is having the sand deep enough so they can moult without being disturbed. Crabs will attack and eat a moulting crab if they find it. I would also have two pools of water just in case :D

I can hearmine clunking about now - I put some pollock and pollen in their food bowl and I think WW3 (crabstyle) may be about to break out....

you can never have 2 many! Got 19 at the moment in a 90 gallon tank. The Caribbean's (PP's) are the friendliest but the Ruggies are just as nice. We have 2 Indo's which are beautiful but very shy just like the little Viola's we have.
Do put a saltwater dish in - seen all the species bathing & drinking from it - even tho' the Viola's are the only ones who 'officially' need it.

looking good dear :)
them shells i have noticed they all seem to come as standard with them? i know sounds silly but if you look through many of the post when people get these they all have same shells?
also is the colour anything to do with like species or do they just vary? i wonder cos my smaller 2 are same colour as yours but big one has longer looking legs and they are almost a purplish

They do darken a little as they get older and when due a shed. Different foods can also alter their colour slightly.

Hermies like the heavily covered mother of pearl shell interiors above anything else. You also need to make sure the shell interiors are free of sand. They tend to run over, quickly dip their bum in and decide on shells. If the new one is full of sand they tend to stick with their old one.

Putting new shells in the water dish can get them to swap shells apparently. :D
