Hi,

Have recently housed my very first millipede using commercial compost with a mix of decaying oak leaves from the local park.

I've read in many places that peat is really the best thing to use as substrate but no where seems to sell it.

Am I missing a trick here?
Where do you get your peat (if you use it)?

A lot of compost companies have jumped on the "peat free envirormentaly friendly compost" bandwagon of the last few years and are now promoting composts either free of peat or with a greatly reduced peat content. Most of my local garden centres no longer carry "Irish Moss Peat" any more, it's seen as a "bad thing".

I have no problem with the cessation of the stripping and destruction of peat bogs. However, untill Ireland shuts down its several peat fuelled power stations, I think my requirement for the odd 50l of peat for use in beetle rearing is not making that much of an impact on the envorinment.

Amazon sell the stuff: http://www.amazon.co.uk/EVERGREEN-LITRE ... 250&sr=8-7

Excellent, if my millipede doesn't get on well with the compost it currently has I'll give that a go.
